HP announced that they are to buy Autonomy for £7.1bn ($11.7bn), a Cambridge based software firm specialising in pattern-recognition technologies. The announcement came as HP announced a massive strategic shakeup that will see them moving out of the PC and Tablet market, leaving them concentrating on servers and software.

Etonbridge thinks that this is an indication of HP's view of the future of desktop being in the thin client arena and that it expects the fat client to eventually become defunct as powerful networks and a centralisation of compute power to the datacentre makes VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) a viable alternative.
